Frequently asked questions.

Whether this is your first time seeking out therapy or if you have previously seen a therapist, the process can still bring about a lot of questions. Below are some of the more frequently asked questions. However, if your question isn't found below, please contact me directly at therapy@kimonapremjith.com.

Is therapy suitable for me?

This is often a very common question people sit with when deciding whether to seek out therapy and a therapist. Therapy provides a space for anyone struggling emotionally, mentally and even physically within themselves or in relationship with others. These struggles vary from individual to individual . Sometimes, we just need a safe space to think about and explore areas in our lives which have caused us distress, discomfort and dissatisfaction.

Therapy also provides an opportunity for growth and self-awareness. Often times we may find ourselves feeling stagnant and cannot figure out a way forward. Thinking together with a therapist, allows for exploration of these stagnant areas and promotes growth.

In conclusion, therapy will be beneficial for anyone struggling with more emotional and relational difficulties but also for those who wish to become more self aware with emotional and mental growth as their goal.

what do i look for in a therapist?

The journey of finding a therapist is a very personal one. Every therapist is unique and will differ in their therapy style, their personality style and their thoughts surrounding the process of therapy. The most important aspect of finding a therapist is their compatibility with you. Therapy is a space to explore the most personal and private aspects of one's life. It is important that you, as a client feel safe enough to open up and trust your therapist with those vulnerable parts of your story. Finding the right fit for you, is one of the most important starting points.

Another important aspect to consider is finding a therapist who can help you achieve your therapeutic goals. Although therapists are trained in treating a range of difficulties, often therapists have their “areas of interest.” These areas often indicate where the therapists strengths lie and what they are most familiar in treating. It can be comforting for clients knowing their difficulties are seen and understood by a therapist who has worked extensively with similar difficulties.

What does an initial session look like?

The initial meeting with the therapist can often be quite anxiety provoking and your therapist will be aware of this. Therefore, the initial session is structured around getting to know you better. Your therapist will ask you more questions than in a typical session, with the aim of collecting information about your background. This information helps the therapist understand you better.

More importantly, the therapist will explore with you, your reasons for seeking out therapy. It might feel quite difficult and emotionally triggering sharing your struggles. Your therapist is aware of how distressing it might be talking about these struggles and will handle it as patiently and delicately as possible. This information is beneficial as it helps the therapist assess the extent of your difficulties, your coping mechanisms and the best way to support you in the therapy, going forward.

How frequent are the sessions?

The frequency of the sessions are often dependent on the individual and the severity of their difficulties. However, generally sessions are once a week. Each session has a duration of 55 mins.

How much does therapy cost?

The sessions are charged in accordance to medical aid rates. Please note this practice is contracted outside of medical aid and run as a cash practice. For more information about payment, please be in contact.

Do i need to prepare for the therapy?

There is no need to prepare for an initial session. Often the therapist will lead with more questions, guiding the session. However, for subsequent sessions it may be helpful for some individuals to think through what they would like to discuss during the session. Other individuals may find it more helpful to be spontaneous during the session. Both of these approaches are acceptable as there isn't a right or wrong way to approach the process. It is important to utilize the methods that make the most sense to you and that which you find are most helpful.
